Of the IDEs reviewed in this article [Cygnus Source Navigator, Code Crusader, and Metrowerks Code Warrior], Code Crusader comes the closest to being useful for commercial-quality rapid applications development.

When I stated that Code Crusader "rocks," I should have included that your service "rocks" as well. $84/seat is a more-than-fair price. Here's to many more years enjoying Code Crusader :-)
The main reason I use Code Crusader is its light footprint, very fast speed, and manageable interface. I can, quite literally, put anyone...Windows users included...in front of this editor and they know what they're doing in a matter of seconds. That, alone, says something.
-- Rob Colbert, System Test Software Engineer, Cisco Systems, Inc.
I use Code Crusader every day for all my coding needs, I have been using it since a download from Caltech some time in 1999 or 2000. I only recently [early 2002] decided to fork out the money to buy it. I'm quite glad I did.
-- Matthew Vickers
Code Crusader is still the best by far for X development. Simple, fast, lots of features, and of course stable.
-- Richard Kolb
I have been using Code Crusader for a while now, and it is really a wonderful tool. It has just the right balance between hiding routine tasks and still being able to tweak things by hand. Few tools find this sweetpoint. The symbol finder is really great, too!
-- Martin Kosina
The class tree is fantastic. I have been porting a largish project from Windows to Linux and seeing the class tree like that [graphically] for the first time really helped to point out a few areas for structural improvement. I especially like the way it handles multiple inheritance.
-- Severin F. Sieben
I'm sure you've already received a ton of these messages, but I'd like to thank you for your Code Crusader IDE - terrific!!
-- Ewout Boks
Just to let you know that I downloaded Code Crusader 2.1.4 on the day you released it, and I have been using it with gusto. This stuff is verrrrry good and I would like to give you the credit for an excellent job. Keep it up.
-- Jojo Kahanding
I still can't believe how well Help is done.
-- Brad H. Krause
We tried Code Warrior for a while, and some other products as well that didn't even pass our "minimum requirements" filter. On the other hand, yours [Code Crusader] turned out to be of the best state of the art products.
-- Leo Frittelli
Code Crusader is great compared to Kdevelop, MS Visual Studio, and other IDE's I've tried. It allows me to concentrate on coding, and not on everything around.
-- Eugene Shostak
This is a much better conceived product than MS Visual C++. There is nothing to get in the way of coding. Just a plain simple GUI that does what you expect. Really clean and nice. I love it.
-- L. Henry Williams
I recently installed Linux. I have Redhat and SuSE running. I have been looking for a text editor. I tested about 15 different editors and IDEs. Your Code Crusader is terrific! I've been programming for over 25 years, and I don't remember ever seeing a better written freeware program. Your attention to detail, including the help files, is truly amazing. Thank you.
-- Jim Balcom
Code Crusader packs a better IDE in at 1.46MB than other IDE's do at 146MB! The no-bull approach really is a breath of fresh air. I get so sick of trying new IDE's just to find out they're so much more effort than they're worth. I was just about to download SNiFF++ Penguin IDE (which is 20MB) over a 56K connection when I saw that yours was only 1.46MB. The result: size means zilch. Code Crusader provides total functionality without any bull.
-- Thomas West
Thank God for Code Crusader. I'm a Windows/Mac programmer from way back -- moved to Windows-based web programming environments years ago. Lately, I've begun to attack JSP/Java on my brand-spanking new Linux box, and I've hated all the GUI editors I tried, including Visual Slickedit, which I was almost going to pay for. (Why do all these UNIX-y guys like garish, ugly editors? And what do they have against undo?) I actually went back to vi running on a dozen xterms. I felt like I had stepped backwards by decades! Finally, I found Code Crusader, and my productivity has shot up tremendously in the last two days. I'm still getting used to it, but I feel a debt of gratitude to you. Thank you sooooo much.
-- Vineel Shah
I am impressed by the C++ class browser (and so are my colleagues, who quickly asked me to make it available on the network). I was amazed at the speed it loaded and scanned the numerous files to extract the relevant classes. The gzipped source for my project is 15.6MB, and Code Crusader only needed a total of 6MB of RAM to display it.
-- François Thunus
I was searching for a good IDE for development work on Linux. After trying several of the available packages, I found jcc to be the most complete IDE available today. Thanks for the contribution.
-- Hiten Doshi
I just wanted to thank you for such a wonderful IDE for linux. My company had purchased Code Warrior for Linux on Tuesday. It came today (Thursday), and within an hour it was repackaged and on its way back. I was frustrated because I had just gotten off of a Windows project, and actually became very fond of Visual C 6.0, so I got on #Linux on effnet and someone mentioned your software. I downloaded it and love it. I'll be mentioning it to all my colleagues. If time permits I'll try and contribute in some way. Once again, thanks.
-- Chris Ferrell
I've been nothing but impressed by Code Crusader. After being
under-impressed by Code Warrior's lack of features, we were afraid we
would be unable to find a stable, complete IDE for Linux. Then we tried
Code Crusader. Code Crusader has no problem handling our porting job --
running through an X server on Win95 boxes compiling DOS-formatted source
off an NFS mounted Netware volume -- and provides a no-nonsense interface
that works.
-- Mike Chinn
Yesterday I was in Fry's picking up some parts for a new machine, and I noticed Metrowerks Code Warrior was on the shelf and was only $99. I've always been curious about it, so decided to give it a try. Now I'm wondering whether I can get my money back. It didn't take long to figure out that Code Crusader is far more stable (Code Warrior crashed on me three times in the first 40 minutes), and far easier to use. Code Crusader is intuitive, and makes sense. It behaves in a consistent manner, and has never once crashed on me. It didn't cost me $99, either.
Sigh. Why did I stray? Great job, Code Crusader developers. Thanks for all the hard work. It's appreciated, even if you don't hear that very often.
-- Bill Kocik
I just want to say thanks for making such a wonderful program. Code Crusader is perfect, a million times better then Visual C++ 6. I'm really impressed.
-- James Becwar
After one week of using Code Crusader I really must say that this is a great program - it greatly facilitates coding and it's not another one of those Visual C++ clones.
Many months later...
I still use the software daily and have to say that I really like it better than KDevelop - much cleaner and not 'bloated'!
-- Christian Wallraven
Code Crusader is an incredible development environement for Linux. I am a convert from the dark side of the force, and had almost given up on finding an IDE equivalent to (or better than!) Visual C++. In almost every respect I like Code Crusader better than Visual C++ and it runs WAY faster.
-- Seth A. Nickell
I'm using Code Crusader to develop the platform independent code of a Windows NT application. I needed to reinstall Visual Studio twice already during the last two weeks, but Code Crusader is still up and running!
-- Aschwin Marsman
I'm new to unix, but very experienced with Windows and Macintosh. Code Crusader is the only IDE I've found for Linux that feels anything like what I'm used to. It makes UNIX a little easier to swallow for those of us used to more GUI oriented tools.
-- Doug Ahmann
Thanks for Code Crusader! I've been a Mac programmer for many years, and have grown accustomed to the function popup menu in Code Warrior (and other niceties). I don't understand why this isn't a standard feature in all IDE's... Anyway, Code Crusader has helped me immensely in my transition from Mac to UNIX programming.
-- Gunnar Proppe
I´ve poked around Help a bit and am deeply impressed already. Thank you for making such a tremendous work available. I bought the C-Forge IDE two weeks ago, but from what I´ve seen until now, I´ll end up using Code Crusader.
-- Mario Vukelic
While the debate over GUI vs. command line will never stop, Code Crusader
makes getting a handle on a large source tree a breeze. I'd never found
an X Windows IDE that'd steer me away from Nedit ... but now I have. I
almost squealed in delight when the class browser popped up the 100+
classes in this project. I did squeal in delight when I began typing
the name of the class I was working on, and the browser scrolled right to
it. If anything will convince my vi devoted friends to learn a new
trick, this is it.
Awesome job. I look forward to far fewer headaches. :)
A few days later...
As far as I'm concerned, Code Crusader rocks. So much so that I might consider
developing with JX rather than the KDE/Qt toolkit. The file open dialog
is one of the best and most intuitive open dialogs I have ever used. The
"red text = invalid path" detail is absolutely priceless.
-- Garret Thomson
I had been using CoolEdit for awhile, but was looking for something a little more than just an editor. Code Crusader looked like it would fit the bill, and did.
-- Scott Billings
I use Code Crusader for developing Linux aplications. It works very well and is very practical. It provides many things that Cooledit doesn't do.
-- Joan Bertran
I must say I am most impressed. This is the only free class browser that has been able to parse this particular project. Others tend to segfault. I'm switching from xjed to Code Crusader.
-- Jan Reimers
I'd call myself a highly console-only person, but the K desktop environment has finally got me to start writing programs for X so I was looking for something to replace JED with an X-like tool that also provides syntax highlighting. I found your program and it does this and much, much more!
Thanks! Keep up the good work!
-- Paul Colclough
I played with many IDEs, looking for the best and greatest one. I tried KDevelop, gIDE, C-Forge, GRASP, FTE and... Code Crusader :-) Well, it seems I'll use THIS one.
-- Vaclav Slavik
Just a note to tell you how much your work on Code Crusader is appreciated! I recently made a major career switch and have begun developing for open source flavors of UNIX. I tried several IDEs (having the most success with gIDE) before someone pointed me towards Code Crusader. Your interface is excellent, your documentation outstanding, and best of all, it runs on very minimal resources! You are to be congratulated.
-- Richard Jordon
Code Crusader is great for all the example programs in my C book, and it makes it much easier than vi/emacs and make files. I'm appreciating your work more every week.
-- Michael Potter
We have been using Code Crusader 2.0.1 for teaching our students C and C++, and even they can't break it. Thanks for a great product.
-- David Styles, Computer Studies, Glasgow Caledonian University
This is a fantastic package. I am planning to put it on our systems for our undergraduates to use.
-- Norm Matloff, Professor of CS, UC Davis
I work for the University of Waterloo and have been asked to set up Code Crusader as the development environment for an Introduction to Scientific Computing course. ... The main reason we chose your program is that it presented an easy to use environment that beginner programers could understand.
-- Andrew Sinclair
Code Crusader is one of the best IDE's I've used so far. Keep up the good (excellent) work. We need more tools like this here in the trenches. Just to prove to you that this is one great tool, I've got a baby and 3 year old kid that occupies most of my time outside of work. This tool of yours makes programming a more enjoyable experience every time I get the chance/energy to do some programming.
-- jojo
I'm very grateful that you have kept up the project. I am using it every day and abslutely love it. I used to work at home all the time since work just had SGI's and emacs and my home had CodeWarrior and my Mac. Since Code Crusader, I work almost exclusively on my SGI.
-- Aaron Lefohn
I saw your Code Crusader page and started drooling like I saw a Viper with Helen Hunt sitting naked in the drivers seat... :) It looks completely AWESOME, and I can't wait to use it!
-- Joshua Kramer
I am writing to commend you for your fine work on JX and Code Crusader. There have been a lot of requests on newsgroups for a nice IDE on Linux. I had considered writing such an environment myself, but it appears that Code Crusader is exactly what they are looking for.
I like the development environment because the keyboard shortcuts are much easier to remember than those of Emacs and others. I also like the way that I can cut and paste between windows. Very nice. Keep up the good work.
-- Peter C. de Tagyos
I just learned about Code Crusader and I've had a lot of fun using it. Thanks very much. I especially like the fact that it is able to keep control of the keyboard under WindowMaker without any fuss :) That differentiates it from programs like NEdit!
-- Paul Johnson
I downloaded Code Crusader five minutes ago. An amazing piece of work. It looks so good that it makes me think about contributing to the development or writing something with JX.
A few days later...
I noticed you put my comment on the Code Crusader page. You might add that I'm still satisfied after a few days of work.
-- Stefano Ghirlanda
I just downloaded Code Crusader, and I use it with the ACE package and my package. It is fantastic; a great way to show people who are new to my project what is going on, easy to get them started. I just played a little with the IDE, and it seems great too. Very intuitive I thought, especially the tree hierarchy.
-- Ganesh Pai
I'm really glad that this tool exists, and want to congratulate you on a remarkably slick package.
-- Benedikt Stefansson
I just discovered Code Crusader and, only from reading your web page, I am
extremely grateful for the work you have done and made available. This may
go a long way to stopping (or at least putting the brakes on) the move to
NT and proprietary tools.
-- Peter Gross
It would also help if UNIX software didn't cost ten times more than NT
software, but the move actually seems to be going in the other direction.
-- John
Thank you for putting in the time to make coding in Unix a pleasure rather than
something likened to changing transmission fluid :)
-- Aaron Lefohn
I just noticed the icons in the "File format" submenu. Brilliant. Not sure my colleagues working under DOS/Windows will appreciate them, but I sure find it nice to have UNIX listed first!
