The major new feature is the ability to specify arbitrary actions independently of the data types. This should allow XDND to be used as the underlying protocol for JavaBeans on X. The protocol is described at http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~jafl/xdnd/ This protocol is supported by JX and Qt, and will soon be supported by GTK+, so programs written for Gnome, programs written for KDE, and programs like Code Crusader and Arrow will all be able to work together on the same desktop. The related file dragging protocol described at http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~jafl/xdnd/dragging_files.html will allow compliant programs to accept drops from both the Gnome and KDE file managers.
